1,160,375. Preparing propylene-butadiene copolymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 18 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 51762/66. Heading C3P. Copolymers of propylene and butadiene are prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of these monomers, optionally containing ethylene, in the presence of catalysts comprising (1) halides of trivalent titanium, (2) alkyl aluminium halides containing 0À25 to 1À5 halogen atoms per aluminium atom and (3) compounds of cobalt with organic carboxylic acids and/or 1,3- dicarbonyl compounds, at temperatures up to 150‹ C. and pressures up to 100 atmospheres gauge. The component (2) may be used as a mixture of aluminium alkyls and halides. The process yields copolymers containing up to 10% of butadiene units. In the example, propylene is initially polymerized using a mixture of a complex of formula 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 , diethylaluminium chloride, and cobaltous stearate, and hydrogen as a regulator; butadiene and triethylaluminium are then added and polymerization continued. A composition comprising polypropylene of intrinsic viscosity of 4À0 dl./g. and 3% of 1,4-cis-polybutadiene having an intrinsic viscosity of 1.9 dl./g. (containing 95% of 1,4-units) is also prepared in the example.
