Heading C3P. α-Olefins of formula CH 2 = CHR wherein R is a C 1-8 aliphatic hydrocarbon chain which may be substituted by alkyl or aryl groups, may be polymerized, optionally with ethylene, one of the α-olefins being present as at least 95% by weight, or block polymerized, optionally with ethylene, in suspension or the gaseous phase at 20- 120‹ C. and less than 50 atm. pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising: (A) as stereoregulator cyclooctatetraene, cyclooctatriene- (1,3,5) or cyclooctatriene-(1,3,6), optionally substituted with aryl or C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy, or a mixture of such compounds, (B) a halogen containing compound of a group IVA, VA or VIA metal, in which the metal is in a valency state lower than its highest possible valency state, (C) a halogen-free organometal compound of a metal of group I, II or III. Component (B) is preferably TiCl 3 and (C) is preferably Al(R) 3 wherein R is any identical or different C 1-40 hydrocarbon, or a reaction product of a trialkylaluminium compound or an alkylaluminium hydride and a C 4-20 diolefin and is more preferably isoprenylaluminium. The molecular weight of the polymers may be regulated by conducting the reaction in the presence of hydrogen.
