Abstract

Ketones having the formula R-CO-CH= CH2 where R is a naphthyl-group or a substituted phenyl-group containing an alkyl-, alkoxy,- or acyloxygroup or a halogen atom, are polymerized to produce clear, viscous or solid substances soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons. The polymers of alkoxy- or acyloxy-phenyl-vinyl ketones are soft and rubberlike. The phenyl group may have one, two, or three chlorine atoms introduced; other p suitable starting materials are para-methylphenyl-vinyl ketone, para-ethylphenyl-vinyl-ketone, para-propylphenyl-vinyl ketone, 2 : 4-dimethylphenyl-vinyl ketone, 2 : 4 diethylphenyl-vinyl ketone, 2 : 4 dipropyl-phenylvinyl ketone, para-methoxyphenylvinyl ketone, para-ethoxyphenyl-vinyl ketone, para-butyloxyphenyl-vinyl ketone, para-acetoxyphenyl-vinyl ketone, para-chlorphenyl-vinyl ketone, or para-bromphenyl-vinyl ketone. Aryl-vinyl ketones are prepared by splitting, e.g. by heating with steam, tris-(aroylalkyl) amine hydrochlorides made by condensing aromatic ketones with formaldehyde and ammonium chloride. Para-chlorophenyl vinyl ketone may be thus prepared from para-chlorophenyl-methyl ketone obtained from chlorbenzene, and para-ethoxyphenyl-vinyl ketone may be prepared from para-ethoxy-acetophenone. Alternatively, b -naphthyl-vinyl ketone is made by splitting off hydrogen chloride from the condensation product of b -naphthoic acid chloride and ethylene. Specification 461,495 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the polymerization of para-acetylamino-phenyl-vinyl ketone and tetrahydronaphthyl-vinyl ketones. The polymerization may be assisted by acetyl benzoyl, oleyl, or stearyl peroxide and may be carried out in solution or aqueous or other emulsion. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
