Abstract

A product simulating leather is produced by treating coagulated and vulcanized latex with a solution of a sulphur chloride in a solvent which does not react upon the sulphur chloride, e.g. a solution of sulphur monochloride in benzol, and then with water before the sulphur chloride has been able to evaporate or to be fixed upon the rubber by decomposition. The coagulated and vulcanized latex may be pure or associated with fillers or textiles, the vulcanization may have taken place before or after coagulation. It is stated that the water decomposes the sulphur chloride forming, in the presence of the rubber, sulphur, chlorine and hydrochloric acid and these substances in the nascent state probably polymerize the vulcanized latex so that it loses all its thermoplastic properties.
