Abstract
A process for reclaiming vulcanized rubber, e.g. from vulcanized rubber scrap and for destroying textile material contained in vulcanized and unvulcanized rubber, more especially vulcanized and unvulcanized rubber scrap, the vulcanized rubber for reclaiming or the vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber for destruction of its textile material is treated at a temperature ranging from 170 DEG to 240 DEG C. and at a corresponding pressure in an autoclave with an aqueous solution of alkali of such low alkali concentration, e.g. 0.2 to 0.5 per cent. that at the end of the treatment the reaction of the solution is neutral or only slightly acid. Plasticizing agents, oil and any other of the products usually employed in alkali rubber reclaiming processes may also be used. In an Example 500 kg. of ground tyre rubber scrap are treated with 1000 kg. of a 0.3 per cent. aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide in an autoclave at a temperature ranging from 170 DEG to 240 DEG C. under a pressure maintained in correspondence with the temperature, for a time which may vary in approximately inverse ratio to the temperature from 8 to 12 hours after which a reclaimed rubber of good chemical and physical characteristics is obtained the textile material being completely destroyed.
