Abstract

Unvulcanized or vulcanized synthetic rubbers such as polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or isobutylene are treated to modify their surface properties by subjecting them to the action of a solution of a chlorite. The preferred chlorite is that of sodium, but the chlorites of barium, strontium or lithium may be used. The solvent may be water in which case a sodium salt of a higher secondary alkyl sulphate is added; or alcohol; and oxalic, formic or acetic acid may be added.ALSO:Unvulcanized or vulcanized rubber is treated to modify its surface properties by subjecting it to the action of a solution of a chlorite. The preferred chlorite is that of sodium, but the chlorites of barium, strontium or lithium may be used. The solvent may be water in which case a sodium salt of a higher secondary alryl sulphate is added; or alcohol; and oxalic, formic or acetic acid may be added. The term rubber includes natural rubber, gutta percha, balata, and synthetic rubbers such as polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or isobutylene.
