Abstract

Bromine water, or a mixture of reagents which liberates bromine in situ, is added to natural or artificial latex to produce brominated rubber containing not more than 70 per cent of bromine. Thus, sodium or potassium bromide and bromate are added to ammonia-preserved latex which has been stabilized with saponin, treated with formalin to neutralize the ammonia and finally acidified with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid; or the acid, bromide and bromate may be added to latex preserved with formic acid; or the bromide and bromate may be added to diluted field latex containing hydrochloric acid; or other reactions involving the oxidation of hydrobromic acid by bromates, permanganates, bichromates and peroxides may be utilized. A product containing 12 to 13 per cent of bromine may be "vulcanized" by heating with zinc oxide and, preferably, magnesium oxide, in the absence of sulphur. Specification 476,743 is referred to.
