Abstract

8-Bromo-1-naphthoic acid is made by interacting anhydro-8-hydroxymercuri-1-naphthoic acid and bromine in aqueous hydrochloric acid. In examples, anhydro - 8 - hydroxymercuri - 1 p - naphthoic acid is mixed with water and caustic potash, cooled to 0--5 DEG C. and treated with bromine and hydrochloric acid, or heated with water and caustic potash to 60--80 DEG C. to give potassium 8-hydroxymercuri-1-naphthoate and then cooled and brominated.
