Abstract

A 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxystilbene-dicarboxylic acid is made by heating an alkali metal salt of 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxystilbene with carbon dioxide under raised pressure. The product is a dyestuff intermediate. In examples, (1) the potassium salt, and (2) the sodium salt of 4 : 4<1>-dihydroxystilbene is heated with carbon dioxide to 170 DEG C. under 120 atmospheres pressure.
