Abstract

Substituted vinyl compounds containing fluorine and at least one other halogen atom in substitution for hydrogen in the vinyl radical are polymerized by heat and pressure, if necessary in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl or other peroxide. There may also be present regulators such as aldehydes, and the polymerization may take place in solution, e.g. in alcohol, benzene, or petroleum ether, or in aqueous emulsion, preferably with an emulsifying agent. In examples: (1) trifluorochlorethylene, (2) 1 : 1-difluoro-2-chlorethylene is polymerized by heat and pressure. Trifluorochlorethylene is obtained from trifluorotrichlorethane (prepared by heating hexachlorethane with antimony tri- or pentachloride and causing hydrogen fluoride to act on the mixture) by eliminating two chlorine atoms by means of zinc. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited in respect of methods of polymerization, and contains as further examples: (3) trifluorobromethylene, (4) trifluorochlorethylene and vinyl chloride, are polymerized by head and pressure. The product of example (4) is stated to be soluble in organic solvents, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters and ketones. U.S.A. Specification 1,970,562 is referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
