Abstract
Trichloromethyldiarylmethanes are prepared by the condensation of chloral or a compound yielding chloral in the presence of sulphuric acid and an aryl compound of the benzene series having replacable nuclear hydrogen characterised in that a liquid mixture of the chloral or chloral yielding compound and the aryl compound is emulsified in sulphuric acid of strength of at least 95 per cent and not more than 98 per cent, and that the strength of the acid is maintained within this range throughout the reaction by the addition of sulphur trioxide or oleum. It is preferred to cool the reaction mixture to prevent excessive sulphonation of chlorbenzene. The product may be recovered in any suitable manner such as that described in Specification 589,466. It is particularly preferred to exclude the formation of solids in the course of the reaction and to avoid this, solvents such as lower aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents are added. In examples, chloral and chlorobenzene are reacted in the presence of sulphuric acid of strengths within the range indicated above.
