Abstract

Alkyl-benzene sulphonic acid chlorides are obtained by reacting alkylbenzene sulphonic acids, the alkyl group of which contains at least three carbon atoms, or the salts thereof, with chlorsulphonic acid. The substituent alkyl radical may be propyl, iso- and n-butyl, iso-and n-octyl, decyl, dodecyl, and a -butyl-n-octyl. The alkyl-benzene sulphonic acids may also carry further substituents, e.g. halogen atoms, methyl and ethyl groups and nitro groups. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent, e.g. benzine and the reaction product may be purified by treating it in cooled condition with a concentrated solution of sodium chloride and then isolated by the addition of a solvent, such as ether which does not mix with water. In examples: (1) decyl benzene is sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid and chlorsulphonic acid then added dropwise at 20 DEG C. to yield the sulphochloride; (2) dodecyl benzene is treated as in (1); (3) decyl benzene is sulphonated as in (1) and a benzine fraction then added after which chlorsulphonic acid is added dropwise at 12-15 DEG C. to yield the sulphochloride.
