Abstract

Sulphur trioxide is stabilized by the presence of 0.01 to 1.0%, preferably 0.01 to 0.5% by weight of the sulphur trioxide of the equimolar addition compound of boric anhydride and dimethyl sulphate.ALSO:The invention comprises an equimolar addition compound of boric anhydride and dimethyl sulphate which may be prepared by heating, at 100 DEG C. with stirring, a mixture of one molecular proportion of boric anhydride and at least one molecular proportion of dimethyl sulphate. It is advantageous to use a molar ratio of 1:1.5 to 1:2 (anhydride to sulphate) and to remove the excess dimethyl sulphate from the cooled reaction product. An example is given of the production and use, as a sulphur trioxide stabilizer, of the addition compound.
