Abstract

Polymerized styrene and its homologues or mixtures thereof or mixtures of these with other substances are obtained by treating the styrene &c. in aqueous emulsion with oxygen or agents supplying oxygen such as benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The emulsifying agents may be soaps, saponins, sulphonic acids, sulphuric esters and their salts, preferably with the addition of higher alcohols, albumenous substances, degradation products of albumen, and other substances which promote emulsification, such as bentonite. The polymerization agent may be added before, during, or after the emulsification. In the examples styrene is emulsified with (1) oleic acid and aqueous ammonia and (2) ammonium oleate and aqueous ammonia and polymerized in each case with hydrogen peroxide at 60-70 DEG C. and 30 DEG C. respectively. Unpolymerized styrene is removed from the product by steam distillation.
