Abstract
268,375. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. March 27, 1926, [Convention date]. Addition to 250,241. Sulphonic acids.-The process described in the parent Specification, in which an aromatic hydrocarbon is treated with a higher aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol and chlorsulphonic acid, is modified by replacing the aromatic hydrocarbon by a sulphonic acid thereof, which becomes further sulphonated. Care is taken that the sulphonic acid is used in a state as anhydrous as possible, which can best be attained by preparing it by means of chlorsulphonic acid, or if sulphuric acid is used the water is removed by heat &c. By this means naphthalene derivatives simultaneously sulphonated in the a- and #-position may be obtained. In an example, chlorosulphonic acid is added to naphthalene at 135-145‹ C. and the mixture is stirred for some time. On cooling to 70‹ C., butyl alcohol and chlorosulphonic acid is run in, and after a time a further quantity of chlorosulphonic acid. When the product has become entirely soluble in water, it is worked up into its dry sodium salt. The product can be used as a wetting agent, an emulsifying agent or the like.
