Abstract

Phthalide (and similarly benzisobenzofuranones) is sulphonated by heating at 120 DEG C. with five parts by weight of 20 per cent fuming sulphuric acid, the sodium salt being isolated by pouring the product into cold brine while the sulphonic acid may be freed from excess sulphuric acid by the addition of a base or basic salt. Phthalide probably gives a mixture of 4- and 7-phthalide sulphonic acids, 6,9-benz-1(3)-isobenzofuranone a mixture of 6- and 9-benzisobenzofuranone sulphonic acids, and 5,8-benz-1(3)-isobenzofuranone a mixture of 5- and 8-benz-isobenzofuranone sulphonic acids.
