Abstract
Diphenyl is sulphonated to diphenyl-4 : 4<1>-disulphonic acid by means of an excess of sulphuric acid monohydrate or oleum containing about 20 per cent sulphur trioxide and the product is nitrated by means of a sulphuric acid-nitric acid mixture to give 2 : 2<1>-dinitrodiphenyl-4 : 4<1>-disulphonic acid. The nitro body is then reduced by known reducing agents such as iron and hydrochloric acid to the 2 : 2<1>-diaminodiphenyl-4 : 4<1>-disulphonic acid.
