Abstract

A sulphonation product of a nitrile derived from a fatty acid containing 6-20 carbon atoms per molecule, suitable for use as a corrosion inhibitor (see Group II), may be prepared (a) by sulphonation of the nitrile with sulphuric acid, oleum, sulphur trioxide or chlorosulphonic acid, preferably in the presence of a solvent, for example by treating a solution of the fatty acid nitrile in perchlorethylene with a solution of sulphur trioxide in perchlorethylene, introducing the mixture into sodium hydroxide, separating off the solvent and evaporating the aqueous phase to produce the salt; (b) by the method described in French Patent No. 983,965 (specifically for stearic acid nitrile), in which the acid nitrile is brominated with bromine in the presence of sulphur as catalyst, and the resulting bromine-containing nitrile is reacted with sodium sulphite or (c) by reaction of the nitrile with sulphur dioxide and oxygen under the influence of ultra-violet light following the sulphoxidation procedure described in German Specification 907,053. The fatty acid may be saturated or unsaturated and straight- or branched-chain, e.g. coconut fatty acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid. Specification 607,204 also is referred to.ALSO:The corrosion of iron, zinc, aluminium and their alloys while in contact with acid or alkaline solutions is inhibited by incorporating in said solutions at least 0.01 per cent of a sulphonation product of a nitrile derived form a fatty acid containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule. The fatty acid may be saturated or unsaturated and straight- or branched-chain, e.g. coconut fatty acid, palmitic acid or lauric acid. The pickling of the metals in sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide (with additions of the inhibitor) is specifically disclosed, as are methods for preparing the sulphonation product (see Group IV(b)). Specification 607,204 [Group IV(b)], German Specification 907,053 and French Specification 983,965 are referred to.
