Abstract

Acetone cyanhydrin is produced by adding gradually gaseous or liquid hydrocyanic acid to acetone in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, the temperature of the reaction mixture being maintained below the boiling-point of the solution. The basic substance should preferably be in low concentration such as 0,5 to 5 per cent in the water in which it is dissolved. In examples, (1) gaseous hydrocyanic acid is introduced into acetone containing a little normal caustic soda solution at room temperature; the temperature rises to 30--35 DEG C. and the mixture is then cooled to prevent further rise; (3) the crude product is heated to 60 DEG C. and an inert gas such as air is passed through to remove remaining traces of free hydrocyanic acid.
