Abstract
Alkali metal hydracrylates are prepared by adding ethylene cyanohydrin to an aqueous solution of a strong base of an alkali metal which is maintained at a temperature of at least 70 DEG C. In an example, the strong base used is sodium hydroxide. During the addition of ethylene cyanohydrin, the solution of the base may be agitated mechanically and removal of ammonia facilitated by the introduction of a small stream of steam. On completion of the reaction, residual ammonia and water may be evaporated off and the product purified by, for example, recrystallization or solvent extraction. The sodium hydracrylate can be converted to another alkali metal hydracrylate by first forming the free acid by treatment with, for example, sulphuric acid. Other strong bases which can be used in the above process are potassium hydroxide and sodium and potassium carbonate. The process may be carried out also at reduced or elevated pressures. Specification 573,384 is referred to.
