Abstract
Aliphatic a o -diaminocarboxylic acids substituted in the a -amino group are heated with cyanic acid or a cyanate to form the corresponding urea. If desired, the substituent in the a -amino group, e.g. an acyl residue, is then removed by saponification. The reaction may be effected in aqueous or aqueous alkaline solution or in the presence of organic solvents; in the latter case it is necessary to acidify the reaction mixture and wash with water. The products possess therapeutic properties. According to the examples: (1) a -monobenzoylornithin is boiled with aqueous potassium cyanate, and dilute sulphuric acid then added to precipitate a -monobenzoyl - d - carbamidoornithin; on heating with dilute sulphuric acid for some hours, d - carbamido - ornithin is obtained; (2) a -monobenzoyl-lysine is treated with potassium cyanate as in (1) and the resulting a - monobenzoyl - e - carbamido-lysine then converted by saponification into e - carbamido-lysine.
