Abstract
Alkyl sulphochlorides obtained by the reaction of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing about 10 to about 20 carbon atoms with SO2 and Cl2 in the presence of light are refined by treating the sulphochloride, or a mixture of the sulphochloride with the oil used as starting material, with fuming sulphuric acid, sulphuric acid or chlorosulphonic acid, or with an anhydride of such an acid. Preferred refining agents are sulphuric acid of at least 80% concentration and sulphur trioxide. The refining agent may be removed by centrifuging or treatment with absorption agents, particularly fuller's earth, with subsequent filtration, or by washing with water which may p contain small amounts of alkalies or salts. The refining is generally carried out at room temperature, and 5-30% of refining agent based on the sulphochloride is generally sufficient.
