Abstract

In the process of the parent Specification in which an alkyl aryl hydrocarbon is purified by treating with an oxidising agent at 20-100 DEG C. for 5-60 minutes, separating the upper hydrocarbon layer and further treating with 1-5% of sulphuric acid (based on the weight of hydrocarbon) at 25-80 DEG C. for 5-30 minutes and recovering the upper hydrocarbon layer, the first stage is effected in the presence of sulphuric acid. For 100 parts of alkyl aryl hydrocarbon there is used an oxidising solution containing 0.1-5 parts of oxidising agent, 0.1-10 parts of water and 0.05-3 parts of 96% sulphuric acid. The oxidising agent may be sodium or potassium chromate or dichromate, chromium trioxide or ozone. The purified hydrocarbon may be clay treated and bleached with a peroxide or by electrolysis.
