Abstract
A process for producing phenol and acetone by decomposing cumene hydroperoxide by means of concentrated sulphuric acid is characterised in that a solution of the cumene hydroperoxide in cumene at a concentration of at least 70% by weight and concentrated sulphuric acid are gradually added to cumene or to a previously decomposed solution of cumene hydroperoxide in cumene, the rate of addition being so controlled that the concentration of the acid in the reaction mixture is maintained in the range of from 0,1% to 1,1% by weight throughout the process. The process may be operated continuously. Examples are furnished. Specification 684,039 is referred to.
