Abstract

Sulpholane and alkyl homologues thereof are prepared by adding sulphur dioxide to a 1,3-diolefine, treating the product with hydrogen peroxide or other peroxy compound from which hydrogen peroxide is liberated under the reaction conditions, neutralizing the product to a pH of at least 5 before, concurrently with or preferably after this treatment, and finally hydrogenating the product.
