Abstract

Hydroquinone is produced by treating a carbinol hydroperoxide of formula p-R1R2C(OOH)C6H4C(OH)R3R4 wherein R1 and R3 are alkyl and R2 and R4 are H or alkyl, with hydrogen peroxide in solution in an inert solvent in presence of, as catalyst, an inorganic mineral acid or an organic acid of K (25 DEG C.) more than 1.5 X 10-3. Sulphuric, perchloric, chloracetic and aryl sulphonic acids, e.g., may be used. In examples, the starting material is the p-cymene derivative (R1, R2, R3, R4, = CH3) i admixture with the corresponding dihydroperoxide.
