Abstract

Rubber is reacted upon with sulphur dioxide to form products varying from elastic substances to brittle resinous products. The rubber may be first purified by treatment with acetone and solution in petrol ether. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent such as benzene and in presence of a catalyst such as nitrate of lithium or other alkali metal or of aniline. Unsaturated compounds such as undecrylenic acid, allyl chloride, styrene or methacrylonitrile may be mixed with the rubber before the reaction. Oxidized derivatives of rubber may be treated. The products may be softened by treatment with cyclohexanone morpholine, cyclohexylamine or piperidine, and plasticizers, fillers, pigments, &c. may be admixed.
