Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1108989/C2/1> wherein the symbol =, except where it appears as part of a benzene ring, has its mathematical meaning, and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriate aldehyde, wherein a hydroxy group present in the benzene ring is free or esterified with a benzoyl radical, with a n-butylmagnesium halide or cyclohexylmagnesium halide in a suitable solvent, decomposing the resulting complex with a diluted aqueous mineral acid or an aqueous ammonium chloride solution and isolating the resulting carbinol.
