Modified resins.-In the process for modifying the physical properties of resins containing high molecular organic acids, e.g. ester gum, described in the parent Specification, the resin is heated under atmospheric or higher pressure with organic compounds of the oxygen acids of sulphur or their chlorine derivatives, e.g. aromatic sulphonic acids or chlorides. In an example, ester gum is heated at 280-300‹ C. in an open vessel with ptoluene sulphochloride or sulpho-salicylic acid. The products are either viscous oils or brittle solids. To the modifying agent may be added other modifying agents, e.g. salts, as described in Specification 287,943, amines, as described in Specification 337,732, or saponaceous compounds as described in Specifications 321,691 and 321,723, for example, a mixture of zinc carbonate and ptoluene sulphochloride may be used. The reaction mass may be submitted to a gas treatment as described in Specification 287,943, to irradiation, e.g. ultra-violet or X-rays, or organic metal-free secondary reagents, e.g., ketones, phenols may be aded thereto. The products may be vulcanized with or without, an accelerator, an activator, or a dispersing agent, e.g. turpentine. Specifications 133,712; 289,414.
