Abstract

The depolymerization of unvulcanized natural rubber is accelerated by subjecting a dispersion or solution thereof to the joint action of a percompound and a sulphur containing depolymerization promoter which comprises aerating the dispersion or solution with oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen during the depolymerization treatment. The depolymerization promoter which is preferably present in an amount between 0.02 and 10 per cent. by weight of the rubber may be the compounds described in Specification 694,317. The per-compound which may be added in an amount of 0.02-15 per cent. may be an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide such as tertiary butyl hydroperoxide or benzoyl peroxide. In Examples, smoked sheet rubber was treated with mercaptobenzimidazole, and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide dissolved in benzene or petroleum naphtha and then oxygen or air bubbled through for a period of about 48 hours. The product is a viscous liquid or a slightly elastic putty-like material.
