Abstract

Oil resisting derivatives of rubber are prepared by reacting a chlorothiolacid, preferably monochlorothiolacetic acid, with rubber to obtain a product with a chlorine content of not less than 13.3 per cent. The reaction preferably takes place in solution in an organic solvent such as benzene or toluene, the product being obtained by precipitation with excess ethyl alcohol or by evaporating the solvent. A peroxide catalyst such as ascaridole may be utilised and the reaction may be accelerated by irradiation with ultraviolet light.
