Abstract
243,966. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Mechanical Rubber Co.). April 8, 1925. Varnishes.-A varnish which dries to a hard rubber film and consisting of a solution of vulcanized rubber in an organic solvent, contains not less than 10 per cent of solid materials, at least 15 per cent of combined sulphur (calculated on the rubber content), and substantially no free sulphur, and has a viscosity at 50‹ C. of 1-10 Engler. The solution may be obtained by dissolving raw or vulcanized rubber in a highboiling organic solvent (such as solvent naptha, xylene, naphthalene, &c.), adding sufficient sulphur to produce a vulcanized rubber containing 15-32 per cent of sulphur, with or without the addition of accelerators, and heating the mixture, e.g. to 160-170‹ until vulcanization to the desired extent has occurred. The greater part of the solvent may subsequently be distilled off or replaced by another solvent. The solutions may be coloured with dyes or pigments.
