Abstract

A composition, for use in the production of a coal tar paint, is prepared by subjecting coal tar pitch to treatment at a temperature of 180-230 DEG C. with air or oxygen or with a small proportion of sulphur, mixing the treated pitch with small proportions of a vegetable oil and of a coal tar oil containing a substantial amount of material boiling above 300 DEG C., and incorporating a finely divided filler in the mixture. The actual paint is prepared by thinning the above composition, e.g. by the addition of crude coal tar naphtha containing at least 2 per cent by weight of tar bases. Specified fillers are lamp black and kieselguhr, and specified coal tar oils are creosote oil and anthracene oil. The vegetable oil may be a drying oil or a non-drying oil, e.g. castor oil. An example is given.
