Abstract

An electrode is produced by baking a pressed mixture of ground semi-coke containing 12-23% of volatile matter and finely divided carbon. The semi-coke may be made from coal tar or petroleum. It may be heated at 200-300 DEG C. in air. The carbon may be in the form of graphite or petroleum coke. The electrode mix may also contain up to 5% of AlCl3 or FeCl3. Pressing may be at 500-800 kg./cm.2 and baking at 1000-1300 DEG C. The composition and conditions of heating are such as to avoid the formation of closed pores and blow-holes.
