Abstract

A carbonaceous seal ring is formed from a mixture of amorphous carbon and graphite, and contains as additive a fluoride of barium, calcium, cerium, magnesium, or strontium, which may be present in amount from 0.5-12.5% by weight. The carbon may be carbon black, lamp black, or petroleum coke flour, and a binder such as coal-tar pitch is included. The additive may be incorporated during mixing, or after the carbon-pitch mixture has been milled; or by impregnation into the moulded rings after baking up to 1500 DEG C.
