Abstract

Zircon-containing material which has previously been purified, say to a residual content of 0,20 per cent titanium oxide and 0,10 per cent ferric oxide, is treated with a halogen in the absence of air and in the presence of not more than 1 per cent carbon at say 950 DEG C. to form and volatilize halides of the remaining impurities. Chlorine is the preferred halogen, but bromine or iodine may also be used. Preferably, the initial material, which may be the product obtained by the process described in Specification 444,285, is finely milled and formed into nodules after being mixed with carbon and a binder. As carbon, lamp black, graphite, petroleum coke, or soft coal may be used, and as binders, gum tragacanth, dextrine, sugar, or glue. The carbon requirement may also be supplied by using sufficient of the carbonaceous binding agent, or by using gases such as carbonyl chloride or a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine. In examples using chlorine or bromine as the halogen 0,2--0,3 per cent lamp black and 0,05--0,10 per cent gum tragacanth are generally used, but in one example a less finely milled initial material is treated in powder form with addition of lamp black.
