Abstract
<PICT:0974019/C1/1> <PICT:0974019/C1/2> A prebaked or soderberg carbon electrode is made by mixing 10-40% by weight of coke from the delayed coking process of particle size between 20 mesh and 1/2 inch with 60-90% by weight of coke from the fluid coking process so that 6-45% by weight of the total coke mixture is ground fluid coke finer than 200 mesh, the remainder being unground coke larger than 200 mesh, adding a carbonaceous binder, and, in the case of prebaked electrodes, moulding and baking. Pitch is added to give 12 to 40% by weight of pitch in the mix which is then fed directly to the soderberg electrode, or to form a prebaked electrode, pressed between 3000 and 10,000 p.s.i., or extruded, and leaked up to 30 days at 1800 DEG F.-2400 DEG F. The coke particles may be calcined prior to mixing at 1800-3000 DEG F. for 0.5 hour to 1-3 weeks to give delayed coke density 2.0-2.10 gms/cc. and fluid coke 1.83-2.00 gms/cc. Specification 752,400 is referred to.
