Abstract

In the production of a carbon electrode from a mixture of carbon particles and pitch, the pitch has a softening point of at least 70 DEG C., preferably between 70 DEG and 85 DEG C., a residue on coking which exceeds 50 per cent of the initial weight of the pitch, and a content of resin insoluble in benzene and soluble in anthracene oil of 20-35 per cent of the initial weight of the pitch, the residue on coking of the resin being at least 89 per cent of the initial weight of the resin. The specific gravity of petroleum coke may be 2-2.05, for pitch coke 1.94-1.97, and the proportion of pitch 15 per cent, for a prebake electrode. The specific gravity of petroleum and pitch coke may be 1.94-2, and the proportion of pitch 30 per cent, for a Soderberg electrode. Analyses of particle size are given.
