Abstract
A compressed mixture of unground fluid coke particles of particle size less than 200 mesh and 20-140 mesh respectively and a cokeable binder is baked at 750-2,400 DEG F. to form agglomerates, the agglomerates are crushed to form pieces of a size between 3/8 and 1 inch, and a mixture of the crushed agglomerates and further ground and unground fluid coke particles and cokeable binder is formed into Soderburg or prebaked electrodes. The coke in the agglomerate mix may be made up of 10-50% of ground fluid coke and 90-50% of unground fluid coke, and that in the electrode mix may be made up of 20-30% of ground fluid coke, 45-65% of unground fluid coke, and 15-30% of crushed agglomerates. The fluid coke may be calcined or uncalcined. The agglomerate and electrode mix may contain 10-40% of binder. The binder may be coal tar pitch, petroleum pitch or asphalt. The agglomerate and electrode mix may be compressed at 1,000-20,000 p.s.i. The electrode mix may be baked at 1,200-2,400 DEG F.
