Abstract
A composition for the production of carbon electrodes (including prebake and Soderberg electrodes) and carbon brushes is produced by coking a bituminous coking coal having an ash content of not more than 2.5 per cent at a temperature in excess of 700 DEG C. and at a rate of temperature rise through the plastic range of at least 100 DEG C. per hour, calcining the resulting coke at 1200 DEG -1500 DEG C., e.g. 1400 DEG C., crushing and milling the coke before or after calcining to decrease particle size and increase bulk density, preparing an aggregate of the coke of suitable size distribution and forming a uniform composition of the aggregate and a carbonaceous binder in an amount sufficient to secure the particles together on carbonization. An electrode having a specific resisitivity not greater than 0.0030 ohms/in/ins and an apparent density of at least 1.39 gm./c.c. may be produced by moulding the composition and heating to a temperature of at least 900 DEG C., optionally to graphitizing temperature. Crushed calcined petroleum coke may be substituted for a portion of the calcined coke in the large particle size range of the aggregate. Aggregates of various size distributions are specified. Suitable binders are bitumen, asphalt, coal tar pitch, oil tar pitch, tar, resin and gilsonite, and preferably have a m.p. of 40 DEG -175 DEG C. A Soderberg mix may contain 20-35 per cent binder, and a prebake mix 15-25 per cent. 0.1-5 per cent of a lubricant, e.g. heavy lubricating oils and black oils, may be added to compositions to be extruded.
