Abstract

Artificial graphite is prepared by heating calcined carbonaceous material substantially free from sulphur, nitrogen and oxygen to a graphitizing temperature. Suitable carbonaceous material may be obtained by coking a petroleum fraction, other than a high-boiling fraction or a residue, or as by-products in the thermal reforming of petroleum distillates giving rise to a polymerized residue, which may be processed to coke. In the example the residue from the thermal reforming of a gasoline fraction is coked, and the resulting coke is calcined at 1000 DEG C. to reduce the volatile content below 1 per cent, ground, and mixed with a coal tar pitch binder. The resulting plastic mass is moulded, or extruded to electrode shape, and the resulting shapes are baked in a ring furnace up to 1200 DEG C., and graphitized at 2200-2700 DEG C.
