Abstract

A graphite body is produced by baking a mixture of carbon powder, e.g. coke powder and a coking carbonaceous binder e.g. pitch in a mould or die while pressure is applied by means of a movable plunger under conditions allowing escape of volatile products, and heating the resulting baked mass to graphitising temperature. A small clearance between the plunger and the mould or die is sufficient to allow the volatile products to escape. The coke and pitch may be derived from coal or petroleum. In the example a mixture of 80 parts of coke and 20 parts of pitch of softening point 85 DEG C. is heated to 800 DEG C. under a pressure of one and a half tons per square inch and then graphitised at 2200 DEG C. The product has a density of 1.80 gm./c.c.
