Abstract
In the production and use of self-baking electrodes of the Söderburg type, particularly in the electrolytic production of aluminium, wherein a paste comprising a dry substance such as calcined coke or anthracite mixed with a binder containing hydrocarbons such as tar or pitch, is fed to a furnace at temperatures below graphitization temperatures, thereby becoming baked and continuously renewed as it is used, the process is characterized in that the dry substance, before the addition of the binder, is calcined to a predetermined extent such that its reactivity, as hereinafter defined, and that of the coke obtained from the binder reach the same value in that part of the electrode in contact with the molten contents of the bath. Reactivity is defined as log <FORM:0687146/III/1> where a is the rate of flow of carbon dioxide passed into a silica tube containing the coke heated to 950 DEG C and b is the rate of flow of the unreduced carbon dioxide leaving the tube. The dry substance may be precalcined for a prolonged period at the same temperature as that of the furnace, the reactivity then reaching a substantially constant value, or it may be precalcined at a higher temperature for a shorter time, subsequent heating at the temperature of the furnace during operation having no further effect on the reactivity. Thus in an aluminium furnace operating at 950 DEG C the dry substance may be precalcined at 950 DEG C for 10 to 20 hours or precalcined at 1100 DEG C for 1/8 -hour, whereafter subsequent baking in the furnace at 950 DEG C leaves the reactivity unchanged.
