Abstract

In making solutions of coal as coal to obtain coal products as described in Specification 268,372, [Class 91, Oils &c.], the solvent power of the oils and tars specified is increased by dehydrogenating them by treatment with sulphur or/and oxygen either prior to or during treatment of the coal. Condensation aids such as zinc chloride, aluminium chloride, potassium hydrate, and metal oxides, may be present. The products may be more or less freed from sulphur in any manner, e.g. by heating to higher temperatures in an autoclave and allowing the hydrogen sulphide formed to escape. For example, water-gas tar or low-temperature carbonization tar is refluxed with 10 per cent by weight of sulphur for about 6 hrs.; when evolution of sulphuretted hydrogen ceases 20 per cent of fused zinc chloride is added and refluxing continued for about 9 hrs. The tar is then separated from the chloride, and used as solvent. It is stated to be less viscous, of better colour, and lower sulphur content, and of greater solvent power for coal than the original tar. Or 80 lb. of tar, 8 lb. of sulphur, and 20 lb. of coal are heated to 320 DEG C. in a rotating autoclave until the pressure ceases to increase; the autoclave is allowed to cool to below 200 DEG C., the hydrogen sulphide allowed to escape, and the coal solution discharged.
