Abstract

Carbon oxysulphide is removed from gases by passing the gases in association with hydrogen over a catalyst consisting of cuprous sulphide, tri-potassium phosphate and potassium carbonate, at ordinary pressure and at a temperature between 200 and 250 DEG C., the carbon oxysulphide being converted into an equivalent quantity of sulphuretted hydrogen which is removed in any known manner. If the gas contains less than 20 per cent of hydrogen it is preferable to add hydrogen to it before treatment. The catalyst may be supported on an inert carrier such as coal or silica and the cuprous sulphide may be produced in situ by the action of the sulphur containing gases on copper compounds. The catalyst may be prepared by impregnating wood charcoal with an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid also containing excess of potassium carbonate, and after drying, impregnating the charcoal with ammoniacal copper oxide which may also contain some ammonium carbonate. After again drying this second impregnation is repeated and after a final drying the catalyst is ready for use. The copper compounds are converted into cuprous sulphide when the sulphur containing gases are passed over it. A catalyst may also be prepared by kneading coal dust or powdered silica with cuprous sulphide, tripotassium phosphate and potassium carbonate, glucose being used as a binder. The resulting paste is fashioned into lumps.
