Abstract
Active carbon is obtained by subjecting dull hard coals, or durains, rich in plant remains which possess slight to medium caking power but insufficient to develop a plastic condition at the temperature of carbonization, to carbonization at temperatures below 600 DEG C., preferably between 450 and 500 DEG C., followed by activation with steam at temperatures up to 1000 DEG C., until its weight is considerably reduced, e.g. by 70 to 80 per cent. Such coal preserves its original form during carbonization. Coals of high caking power are suitably treated before carbonization, e.g. by oxidation with hot gases or agents such as ferric chloride or by extraction with solvents. The coals are preferably treated in sized lumps, e.g. from \ba1/4\be inch to 1\ba1/4\be inch, but they may be powdered and briquetted.
