Abstract

239,993. Dewar, W. Aug. 29, 1924. Coking processes.-Coal is subjected to a preliminary heat treatment at a temperature about 300‹ C., and for 100 to 120 minutes, to drive off the constituents which cause fusion to take place in the ordinary distillation. The charge is then heated to between 400‹ and 600‹ C. The retorts mav be heated either externally or internally or by both methods, and the heating medium may be gaseous or liquid or may be molten metal. The by-products from both stages are recovered and the solid product may be used as blending material for carbonization when non-coding coal is not available, or may serve, after crushing, as a pulverized fuel.
