Abstract

173,662. Robus, A. J. Nov. 8, 1920. Retort furnaces; charging. - In apparatus forthe distillation of peat, the raw peat is charged into a hopper F and fed by rotary spiral conveyers J through tubular retorts E maintained at a temperature of about 500‹ C. at the hot zone K by burning the non-condensible gases generated in the apparatus. The conveyers J extend only along the cooler parts of the retorts in which the raw peat, due to compression, is caused to give up its moisture as water which is drained off at the charging end. The charcoal falls to the bottom of the chamber M and is removed therefrom to adjacent cooling-chambers, in which it is quenched.
