Abstract

273,935. Simpson, K. M. Sept. 22, 1926. Carbonizing processes and apparatus.--In a low temperature carbonizing process in which the coal &c. is conveyed in receptacles through a distilling zone, the uncharged receptacles are passed through a heating zone and are made sufficiently hot to carbonize the charge as it is conveyed to the discharging point. Combustion gases are admitted to flues 5 in the base 4 of the carbonizing chamber which has an interposed hearth 3, feed hoppers 16<1>, 17, a discharge outlet 13, and an opening 7 for taking off distillation gases. An endless conveyer 9 consists of a series of metal pans 10 preferably of thick cast iron, carried by chains 11 extending round sprockets 7<1>, 8. The temperature is maintained high enough to heat the pans to at least 700‹ C. so that as they reach the further sprocket 7<1> they are at about 500‹ C. Pulverized coal is fed to the pans in a layer of say ¢ inch. It may be preheated in an auxiliary conveyer 14.
