Abstract

Apparatus for making or for revivefying activated charcoal comprises a shaft R surmounted by a hopper B<1>, from which the powdered charge is fed by a screw W<1> on to a series of plates E mounted on a rotary shaft S. The charge is scraped from one plate to the next by scrapers V, and conical baffles F direct the falling material to the inner part of each plate, the residue collecting in a <PICT:0358110/III/1> hopper B<2>. The activating gas is passed in through pipes H<2> in front of each of the scrapers V or through a pipe at the bottom of the shaft.ALSO:A carbonizing retort is heated by the hot gases from a rotary cement kiln, and the residue from the retort, when treating coal, oil-shale or the like containing a sufficiently high percentage of aluminium silicate, are, together with limestone or lime charged into the cement kiln. The additions for cement manufacture may be added to the charge before or after carbonization.
